The World Youth Day, o WYD, is an event organized by the Catholic Church, that in words of John Paul II, it’s main purpose is to place Jesus Christ as the center of the faith and in the life of each young person, so it is the point of constant reference and the true light of every initiative and to give all the educational tasks of the new generations.

Likewise, as John Paul II explains, The World Youth Day consists of the journey of the Church for the youth and with the youth. His offer is not a substitute for the usual pastoral youth, frequently realized with great sacrifice and abnegation. Rather he wants to strengthen it by giving a new incentive of commitment, goals increasingly significant and participative. Tending to provoke a major apostolic action among the youth, it doesn’t want to isolate them from the rest of the community, but to make them protagonists of an apostolate that transmits to other ages and situations of life in the area of the new «evangelization».

Annually every diocese of the world celebrates the Palm Sunday day, with a main ceremony in the Vatican. Nevertheless, every two or three years, there is a great international meeting done in a certain city. This ceremony is lead by the Pope. This meeting, of several days long, is the one that is usually associated with the name of World Youth Day.
